Caring For Your Carving

Wood naturally develops cracks as the outer part dries and contrast before the inner part, leading to the formation of cracks. Despite our repeated emphasis on this natural process, we continue to receive numerous inquiries. Please note that we will not issue refunds for orders due to dissatisfaction with the cracking.

Cracking Explanation:

Our carvings originate from complete logs, making cracking an inevitable part of the natural process. As the owner, expect and embrace the occurrence of cracks. Many in the carving community consider it an added character to your piece. While most carvings feature a relief cut to guide the cracking, it's not foolproof.

Display Guidelines:

Remember, your carving is made of wood, making it susceptible to splitting, rot, fading, burning, mold, and insect attacks. Choosing an appropriate display spot can significantly extend its lifespan. Avoid placing it on soil or grass; instead, opt for gravel, concrete, or concrete pavers to facilitate proper water drainage.

Maintenance:

We employ various finishing products depending on whether the carving is intended for indoor or outdoor use. Regular reapplication of finish is advisable, and we can guide you on the frequency based on your specific circumstances. If your carving develops a check(crack), there are several methods for repair, including using caulking or wood putty.

Restoring a check or crack in your carving can be achieved in several ways:

-For carvings with a solid color paint, you can utilize indoor/outdoor caulking to fill the check and seamlessly paint over it to match the existing color. Additionally, you can use affordable spray paint from your nearest hardware stores or Wal-Mart, along with caulking in various shades such as white, brown, or black.

-If your carving has a natural wood color, you can employ Wood Putty or Epoxy to fill the check, followed by refinishing it with stain or water-based Spar Urethane.

-Wood Shims, paint sticks, or shavings can also be used to fill the check, smoothed through sanding, and then refinished with stain, paint, or Spar Urethane.

-A quick fix involves reapplying stain or paint, as well as Spar Urethane in the crack to ensure it seamlessly blends with the rest of the sculpture.

-Alternatively, you can reach out to us for repairing your wooden sculpture for a fee.
